What do we focus on with 2-5 year olds?

Getting students used to taking lessons

  • Violin may be the student's first extracurricular activity, so they may need time to get used to the new location, new teacher, and the new expectations of daily practice
  • Students may simply want to play pieces, and it may take time for them to accept corrections from their parent or teacher
  • Lesson and practice times for this age group are usually longer than the child's attention span, but after many sessions, students' attention spans grow and adapt. Additionally, their increased ability to concentrate usually transfers to reading, writing, math, and other subjects.
  • Younger students (2-3 years old) will often see the violin as a toy, and may want to choose another toy to play with during lessons or practice time. This conflict will fade over time as violin becomes a more and more normal part of the child's life.

Learning to care for the violin

  • Students will learn not to run with the violin, not to leave the violin on the floor, not to touch the bow hair, etc.
  • Students and parents will learn to take out and put away the violin
  • Students and parents will learn the names of the parts of the violin and bow
  • Parents will learn to tune the violin. This can be surprisingly difficult even for adults, so students in this age group are generally not expected to tune their own instruments.

Learning Basic Violin technique, along with both note reading and ear training

  • Students will learn proper violin hold, bow hold, posture, and the basic movements of playing that they will refine over many years
  • Students who start very young (2-3 years old) will take a long time to do this, but will generally play more naturally than later starters by the time that they move to the next level.
  • Students will learn to read most notes in g clef
  • Students will learn to read basic rhythms
  • Students will learn to recognize certain intervals by ear
  • Students will be able to learn music both by sight-reading and by ear

Being able to play simple pieces beautifully

  • Students will learn to listen to their own sound, and will learn to distinguish between beautiful and ugly sounds.
  • Students will progress at their own pace, never being forced to play music that is too difficult. Playing a large amount of easy music is not only the fastest way to improve, it is also much more enjoyable for the student than struggling through a single difficult piece.
