Courses

Focuses and Goals of our Lessons

Building Technique Without Frustration

  • Students will build strong fundamentals from the very beginning, so as not to have to unlearn bad habits later.
  • Students will build to advanced technique in small steps and avoid large jumps in difficulty, which can be frustrating for students.
  • Students will build technique by learning a large amount of easy music, which is both more fun and more efficient than learning a single difficult piece.
  • Students will learn pieces that are easier than their scales and exercises, which will allow them to play more freely and enjoyably, without having to worry about technical issues.

Opportunities to Play With and Perform For Others

  • Students will begin duets and other ensemble pieces from an early stage, in order to build the skills necessary to play with others.
  • For students who wish to play with their peers, we also offer group lessons
  • For students with older siblings or parents who play piano (or other instruments), we can also provide sheet music for accompaniment and duets
  • Students will have the opportunity to perform in both large and small recitals
  • We will assist those who wish to enter competitions so long as we deem that doing so won't hinder their overall development
  • For advanced students with exceptional ability, additional solo performances can be arranged

Students will learn good practice habits

  • Students will learn to practice efficiently, creating a virtuous cycle of practice→improvement→enjoyment.
  • We provide both parents and students with detailed materials and clear guidance on how to practice each exercise and piece
  • Students will learn how to isolate and efficiently practice difficult sections, rather than simply playing through their music over and over
  • Students will learn to listen to their own sound, feel their own body, and fix their own problems
  • All of the good practice habits students learn will also apply to other disciplines

Help for students and parents new to the violin

  • For parents unfamiliar with the violin, the teacher will help parents buy or rent a suitable instrument
  • For students buying full sized instruments, the teacher will help students test the instrument and help them learn what to listen for
  • Students will learn the parts of the violin and bow, and their purpose
  • Students will learn about how to take care of a violin, and when to take it to a violin shop

Playing the violin free of pain and injury

  • Students will learn how to hold the violin without tension, and thus without injury
  • Students will learn about various joints, muscles, and bones in their body, how they interact with each other, and how to use them to best effect

Music Theory/ Style, and Interpretation
